song of the week: lemolo ~ on again, off again

June 25, 2012 in song of the week

In the long standing tradition of bringing you music in our song of the week that is currently obsessing in my brain, I bring you a song that has been my obsession for a week.  Lemolo’s On Again, Off Again.

If there was ever a time to discover this musical duo comprised of Megan Grandall and Kendra Cox, this is the time.  On July 29th and 30th they will play two sold out record release shows at the Columbia City Theater in Seattle.  Then on July 4th we may very well be celebrating, not the nations independence day but rather the July 3rd release of their debut full-length The Kaleidoscope.

If that seems like high praise for a band you haven’t heard of before, you’re right.  The praise is rightly deserved. If On Again, Off Again is any indication of what The Kaleidoscope will offer, it is going to be an atomic bomb of “dreamy” pop and addictive melodies, so intense you might just melt into the floor.  The sultry vocals will wrap their arms around you, rock you gently to the simple instrumentation, and then pull you in, as your cells disincorporate.

Lemolo is not unlike another musical duo to the south, Pure Bathing Culture.  The major difference being that unlike PBC where the vocals fade into the background, Lemolo’s are front and center providing the real narcotic element of the music.  On Again, Off Again, starts with a simple guitar riff, slowly adding drums, and building beautifully in the middle, but always keeping things  low key and simple.  It’s the vocals that do the heavy lifting, where you might expect some fancy guitar or keyboard work the vocals step in a fill everything out.  So satisfying in fact, you could listen to the song a cappella.

I’m far from making a real discovery here, plenty of people around the PNW have taken notice of Lemolo the last few years.  Mere seconds into the song you can tell it feels special, and that’s because it is.  If you’re like me and July 3rd feels too far away, the ladies of Lemolo have been ever so generous to provide On Again, Off Again as a free download at their website.  You can also purchase their EP Lounge Light here, and two of their singles here.  They’ll be playing a number of shows around the PNW this Summer, so make sure to catch at least one of them.

If you’re having trouble getting On Again, Off Again out of your head I believe they hold meetings at community centers to help you deal with that affliction.  My name is Brian Snider and I’m a Lemoloholic.  (Sorry that was a dumb joke, but not too dumb not to leave it in.)
